Frequently Asked Questions
Looking for application and eligibility details? Find additional information on Applying to the Minor.
1. Can I use a different second year statistics course in place of STAT 201 as the prerequisite for STAT 301?
STAT 201 is a hard prerequisite for STAT 301. While there is some overlap between STAT 201 and other second-year statistics courses, they are significantly different enough not to be credit-excluded. This includes topics such as simulation-based inference and reproducible scripting for analysis.
2. Do I actually need to take the extra prerequisites for a course from the Data Science minor's upper-level requirements that have prerequisites beyond what is required for the minor (like CPSC 304)?
Yes, you need to complete all the prerequisites for any course you want to take. However, note that the minor is designed so that it is possible to complete the upper-level minor requirements without taking additional prerequisites, e.g. by taking CPSC 368 rather than CPSC 304.
3. I was admitted into the minor before "CPSC/DSCI 430 Data Science Ethics" became a requirement, do I need to change my course selections?
No, if you were admitted into the minor prior to December 2022, then DSCI 430 (or CPSC 430) remains an optional requirement for you and you don't need to make any changes to you original course selections. That means that instead of DSCI 430 (or CPSC 430) being required, it is part of the optional requirements in point 4, and you are required to take four of the optional courses instead of the current version that says 430 + three of the optional courses.
4. How many courses am I allowed to double count?
This is up to your home faculty. For example, the information about double counting in the faculty of science can be found in the UBC Calendar in the Bachelor of Science Upper Level Requirement page.
5. Can I take a course as "Credit/D/Fail" for completion of the minor?
No. Please see the Faculty of Science Frequently Asked Questions: Courses page for more information, as well as official details in UBC Calendar's Credit at UBC and Elsewhere: “For B.Sc. students, courses that fulfill the Lower-level Requirements, Communication Requirement, Science Breadth Requirement, and requirements of their specialization(s) are not electives [eligible for C/D/F]”
