DSCI Major

The Major program is for UBC Science students who want an upper year specialization where they can: 

  • Build a career in data science or AI.
  • Develop advanced technical and analytical skills.
  • Study data science in depth.

In-depth exploration of of data science

The Major in Data Science specialization equips students with the knowledge and skills to ethically and transparently apply modern and broadly applicable data science methods. 

Its graduates are professionals who can effectively communicate complex data analyses while upholding fairness and security in their work with a commitment to continual learning and ethical conduct in the ever-evolving field of data science.

The Minor program is for students in any faculty at UBC, who want to leverage powerful data analysis skills to:

  • Complement your current major.
  • Apply data science in your field.
  • Build a foundation in data science.

Enhancing your skills with data techniques

The Minor in Data Science is an interdisciplinary program that enables students to gain the skills necessary to perform data science tasks in conjunction with the skills they learn in their major.

Students gain an understanding of key concepts such as how to program using data, use statistics on data, and how to use machine learning and statistical models. The minor is open to any UBC-Vancouver undergraduate student including those that are not exposed to data science topics within their major specialization.

Learning Outcomes

Whether you choose the Data Science Major or Minor, you'll develop the following core skills

Selection, integration, and application of methods, models, and algorithms to address analytical questions, considering fairness, transparency, and ethical implications.

Writing efficient, maintainable code using modern programming languages and employing AI tools while understanding their limitations.

Responsible transportation, storage, curation, and governance of data, addressing privacy and security concerns.

Designing reproducible workflows, interpreting results in context, and recognizing biases in data and models.

Effectively conveying findings through clear writing, oral presentations, and data visualizations tailored to diverse audiences.

Ethical and equitable teamwork, reflection on current practices, and commitment to continuous learning in data science.
