Find out everything you need to know about joining the Data Science Minor.
Application Timeline and Instructions
Applications to the Data Science Minor opens in April each year and closes around mid-May.
To be eligible to apply for the minor, you will need to have finished (or be finishing up) any course prerequisites by the time of the application. You can then submit your application by filling out the Data Science Minor application form (if some of your required prerequisite courses are still in progress, you can wait to submit your application until the end of the application period or enter "In progress" if you believe the grade might not be released in time).
In addition to the application form, you will also need to complete any steps required by your home faculty to enroll in a minor (i.e. the degree program that you are in – BA, BSc, BCom, etc). You will need to contact your home faculty for exact information regarding which forms you need to fill out. For example, here are the pages with information about enrolling in minors for students in the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Arts.
Admission Requirements and Eligibility
Students applying for the Data Science minor must, at the time of application, satisfy the prerequisites for admission mentioned below and the requirements imposed by their home faculty.
Admission Process
The Data Science minor admissions team sends the list of the accepted and rejected students to the students' Faculty advising, who chooses how and when to reach out to the students (some Faculties only reach out to the accepted students). This usually happens in end of June over 1-2 weeks, so if you have not heard back from your faculty, please be patient as they continue contacting all students.
Our goal for the program is to eventually offer enough seats so that all eligible students can be admitted. However, due to the high demand for the program, we are not yet able to admit all eligible applicants. When the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces, a stratified selection process is used to determine admissions. This is done primarily to provide opportunities to students who would not otherwise get exposed to datascience topics in their majors. As a result, admission is not based on GPA, and eligible applicants may not be selected even if they meet all admission requirements.
If you are not admitted to the minor, you are more than welcome to try and complete all of the Data Science Minor requirements on your own. See the "Selection to the Minor" section below for more detail.
